Senior citizens who need help paying for their prescriptions can get assistance this week signing up for discount cards from an array of drug manufacturers.

To qualify, they must be enrolled in Medicare, the federal insurance program for older Americans, and meet various income thresholds set by the drug companies. Moreover, they cannot have any prescription coverage from such sources as veterans' programs; Medicaid, which provides government-sponsored insurance to low-income people; or private policies.
