"[Remote access] is an important area of focus for us," said Karyn Mashima, Lucent's vice president of advanced communications systems.

Currently, Lucent partners with Paradyne Corp. for DSL (digital subscriber line) technology and Ascend for access servers. But while these partnerships temporarily fill a product void, Lucent plans to go a step further.

"It's right to anticipate we may do a little bit of both [an
acquisition and partnerships]. It is going to be important for us to be both organic-meaning we own [the technology]-and to partner," Mashima said.
