Jim,

Funny that you should mention that.

I used to work at a community college district office. We had a student helper in our employ who was using college hardware to send out these vulgar e-mails and posting crap like that on chat boards (AOL, I think). Several of our people knew he was doing it and warned him, but he persisted anyway. Well, the various webmasters involved traced the posts back to our site, and our webmaster tracked the posts from there back to this student's account. The entire trace, from the recipients back through intermediate sites to our site and ultimately to the student, took less than two hours.

When our Vice-chancellor was informed of what had transpired, an immediate zero-tolerance policy was activated. The student was at lunch, so not immediately available, but the powers that be changed passwords, repossessed hardware and were waiting for him by the front entrance when he returned from lunch. All our property was reclaimed and the student fired on the spot. Security was notified that he was to have no admission to any college building under any circumstances. In short, he was gone in the blink of an eye. No excuses or alibis were accepted. Just, poof!!! Gone!!!
