Steve; Unix underwent an explosion of differentiation, and as a result ended up with 20-30 different species, none of which could interbreed(to use a biological parallel). True there were major ones, but the net result was a dinosaur family. No common platform meant no large market, and no products except for the proprietory few. No good GUI emerged that would run on all platforms(Rhapsody?? from Apple??)
The AT&T first let Unix out of the bag it gave too much freedom to those who wanted an exclusive OS, and that is what they did, killed it.
It still twitches, and there is a large amount installed, but new devs have dried up, and it is doomed.
