Which agrees with Haas who made it simple. Simple carbs = no, complex carbs = yes. (Alcohol has many simple carbs.)

On his starter diet it kicks a person into ketosis. Apparently the high fat / carb fear diet produces similar results.


Ketosis can take place on extremely low carb diet.

As far as the carbs (simple vs. complex), I don't know how much difference it makes. The body converts all carbs to simple glucose and glycogen, no matter what the origin was.

What may make difference is not the type of carb it started out as, but what other nutrients come with it. You don't really get any useful untrients from 1 gram of carbs that come from sugar, but you do get a lot of other nutrients that come with 1 gram of carbs from spinach.
