But there are other reasons, pertaining to why consumers might want coverage for routine health care use. First, if it’s through an employer, the consumer benefits from the employer-sponsored health insurance tax subsidy. That makes covered care cheaper than it would be if consumers paid for it with after-tax dollars on their own.*

The downsides, though, are that insureds have no skin the game AND the insurance companies are going to make a profit on anything they cover, two of the most heavily cited reasons for our health care being so expensive. Not to mention the perception to which it leads, that there is some kind of "entitlement" or "right" to these things, and the ensuing slippery slope that occurs as a result of covering more.

We should be actively seeking ways to cover LESS stuff under health insurance, not more.
