Com21 Develops Full-Featured DOCSIS System Solution
DOXcontroller XB(TM) Complements ATM-based ComUNITY Access(R) System
MILPITAS, Calif., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Com21, Inc. (Nasdaq: CMTO - news), a leading global provider of system solutions for the broadband access market, announced today it is expanding its product family, and is developing an end-to-end system solution for the DOCSIS market. The system, known as DOXcontroller XB (for eXtreme Bandwidth), is designed to be fully compliant with advanced DOCSIS standards, and includes features such as Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs), Quality of Service (QoS), optimized scheduling, and spectrum analysis.

``Com21 has established a reputation as an innovative and reliable end-to-end solution provider with our ATM-based ComUNITY Access System,'' noted George Merrick, president and CEO of Com21. ``With over 1800 ATM headends deployed worldwide, we have the systems expertise needed to strongly enter the DOCSIS end-to-end market. The DOXcontroller XB System perfectly complements the ComUNITY Access System for those ATM customers considering a migration to a DOCSIS environment, and is a leading-edge solution for those cable operators looking to deploy the full range of DOCSIS features.''

The DOXcontroller XB System comprises a headend (DOXcontroller 1000) and the newly expanded version of the popular NMAPS (Network Management and Provisioning System). Previously available only for the ComUNITY Access System, the updated NMAPS 5.0 now supports DOCSIS systems, as well. The one rack unit high headend offers full DOCSIS compatibility with expanded features, including advanced TDMA support and superior symmetric performance for advanced symmetrical data rate applications. The DOXcontroller 1000 provides full support for both DOCSIS and EuroDOCSIS environments, with user-configurable upstream channel bandwidth allocation and load balancing.

The easy-to-use NMAPS 5.0 provides the ability to remotely provision, configure, and monitor the DOXcontroller 1000 through a standard web browser. Full-featured, NMAPS 5.0 provides management interfaces for QoS and Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) settings, as well as subscriber provisioning, monitoring, fault analysis, and performance management tools. The network management system's familiar interface provides a seamless transition for current ComUNITY Access System users, minimizing the need for training.

The Company expects to enter customer trials of the DOXcontroller XB System in the spring, with volume customer shipments in the third quarter of 2002.
