Jim,
I appreciate the thought, but I don't have anything figured out. When you start thinking that way, you get bulldozed. I am just a survivor. Fortunately, I know people who have been trading 30+ years and they deigned to throw me a few trading bones while they roared with laughter at all my mistakes. " If you don't know who the fool in the market is, it's probably you."
----Warren Buffett
About ten years ago, I was told this.
1. All news is old news to somebody. The big guys always know before we do.
2. Don't fight the trend. GO WITH IT!!
3. Buy stocks which go up on bad news and sell the ones that go down on good news. Don't try to figure out why. By the time you do it will probably be too late.

I have done a lot of work on trading(which has nothing to do with investing, by the way) and I still learn something new everyday and I still get smacked at least a couple of times a year, but overall I do pretty well and that is what keeps me going. I realize this is not exactly rocket science, but I hope it helps a little.

Ciao,
Steve
