I've been thinking about getting back into Pairgain, but I'm unclear why Pairgain has dropped recently. This may be part of it....
May 11 - SBC walks access path with Adtran
SBC Communications will use a new access device from Adtran as part of its Integrated Pathway service, becoming the first local operator to use the Adtran product.
The service, which will soon be available in SBC's Southwestern Bell and Pacific Bell markets, offers multiple voice and data services on a T-1 line to be terminated at a central access point, the Adtran TSU 600E.
"We are offering a menu of connected services that customers can pick and choose from," said Katie Doughty, product manager at SBC. Offerings include basic telephone service, Centrex and PBX trunks on the voice side, and frame relay and private line offerings on the data side. The service is aimed at businesses of varying sizes, Doughty said.
Integrated Pathway is offered via a joint marketing agreement between SBC and Adtran under which SBC sells the service and Adtran installs the access device.
"When customers migrate to this mixed-mode T-1 network, SBC is giving them a T-1 and providing the Adtran [multiplexer] to give them the same access point," said Everett Brooks, product manager at Adtran.
SBC acts as the main point of contact for customers, but Adtran contributes technical support, Doughty said. "Customers only have to deal with one provider even though they get the expertise of both SBC and Adtran," she said.
The TSU 600E supports up to 24 channels and features built-in monitoring and control capabilities via embedded simple network management protocol. The unit's modularity allows it to support multiple voice and data services, so different services can be added or removed without replacing the equipment.
"The benefit to the carrier is that a year from now [as customers want different services], they won't have to take our equipment out--they just put in additional modules," Brooks said.
