My girlfriend is American and has a good job. I am a penurious Brit. We met on the internet over a year ago and I have been to the States to meet her once, which was a total success. We are considering living together in the US (she has small children, mine are grown) but because of work restrictions, I would be limited to the role of househusband. She is happy about this and says it is common amongst her female colleagues. I think I could handle that situation but I was brought up to believe that the man should be the main breadwinner in a relationship. Should I swallow my pride for the sake of our love or, given the opportunity, insist on my right to work? I am neither an ambitious careerist nor a gold-digger. Name and address withheld The notion that the man must be the breadwinner goes back to the hunter-gatherers of the Stone Age and the Victorian paterfamilias. It is no longer relevant in today's society, where opportunities are more equal. The job of looking after small children (househusband or housewife) is the most important work that anybody can do. You need to make sure that you are acceptable to and accepted by your girlfriend's small children. But that is more important than any job you can get. To get work and a work permit is not easy in the US. Nobody has a "right to work". Looking after small children is harder work than most of us do. I should go for it, if you are lucky enough to have found true love. A househusband is a prouder calling than the way that most of us scratch a living
