Westell to demonstrate MPEG1 video streaming over xDSL systems......

Westell Joins with: GTE, Lucent, Amati, Cisco, Precept, Atlantech and Nortel at Networld+Interop Fall '97

DSL Applications at Speeds of 2Mbps to 7Mbps will be Demonstrated

AURORA, Ill., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Westell Technologies, Inc.
(Nasdaq: WSTL) today announced ADSL demonstrations with GTE, Lucent, Amati,
Cisco Systems, Precept, Atlantech and Nortel at Networld+Interop's Fall 97
tradeshow in Atlanta. Westell will collaborate with these industry leaders to
showcase the benefits of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) solutions for very fast
Internet, remote LAN access and video applications. Westell's FlexCap2(R)
Rate Adaptive Digital Subscriber Line (RADSL) system and SuperVision(R) DSL
Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) will demonstrate various applications running at
speeds from 2 Mbps to 7 Mbps.
GTE (booth # 8057), Westell (booth # 665) and Cisco (booth # 5919) will be
cooperatively demonstrating video streaming over ADSL (Asymmetric Digital
Subscriber Line). This will include stored video and live video from the GTE
booth-top camera. The server containing the stored video and Cisco's 7505
router and Catalyst 3000 LAN switch will reside in the GTE booth along with
the central office equipment and Westell's FlexCap2 ADSL modems. The
streaming video can be viewed locally in the GTE booth, but will also be
available in the Cisco and Westell booths. Cisco and Westell will demonstrate
Westell's ADSL FlexCap2 remote modem and a client PC, supported from a local
copper access loop from the GTE booth, to show the application opportunities
created by video streaming over distance through an ADSL modem passing data at
2.2 Mbps.
Lucent Technologies will highlight Westell's SuperVision Digital
Subscriber Line equipment in their booth (booth # 1973). Westell and Lucent
have announced plans to develop Digital Subscriber Line technology from
Westell's SuperVision System on the SLC(R) 2000 Access System and SLC Series 5
carrier system. This solution will allow ADSL technology to be deployed on
existing remote Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) systems, providing a cost-effective
deployment strategy for telecom carriers using Lucent DLC solutions. The
equipment in the Lucent booth includes a SuperVision network interface module,
a SuperVision Line Module (ATU-C), and a SuperVision remote (ATU-R).
Precept Software and Westell have cooperated to provide IP/TV, using
bandwidth-efficient IP Multicast technology combined with the speed of ADSL to
deliver real-time video programming to thousands of users simultaneously.
This application was selected for demonstration in the InteropNet Applications
Forum area at the main entrance of Networld+Interop. The demonstration
consists of Precept's IP/TV server connected to an Ethernet hub and then to
Westell's FlexCap2 ADSL system via a 10BaseT interface. Standard copper pair
is used to connect the central office ADSL to the customer premise ADSL. The
IP/TV viewer at the customer premise is supported from the remote ADSL via a
10BaseT interface. The IP/TV system, communicating over ADSL, provides an
economical means of disseminating information to thousands of users
simultaneously.
Amati Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: AMTX), having recently announced
an agreement to merge with Westell that is subject to shareholder approval,
will be demonstrating MPEG video streaming, internet access and simultaneous
voice over ADSL Discrete Multitone (DMT) technology at 6 Mbps downstream and
640 kbps upstream, in the Westell booth. Amati will also demonstrate ADSL
technology in the Texas Instruments booth (booth # 4537). The demonstrations
will consists of the Amati Allegro access system, depicting a central office
installation, and an Overture 8 (Model 810) remote unit used at the customer
premise. A central office management site will be displayed using Amati's
Node Manager, an SNMP Network Manager, designed to support the Allegro system.
Amati is a leading developer of DMT technology for VDSL and xDSL markets.
Amati's patented DMT technology is an international standard for ADSL as
recognized by the American National Standards (ANSI) and the European
Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). Amati has licensed DMT to
companies such as Alcatel, Analog Devices Inc. (NYSE: ADI), Motorola and
Nortel.
Westell's booth (# 665) will feature MPEG1 video streaming and internet
access through the FlexCap2 ADSL system and the SuperVision Digital Subscriber
Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM). Video servers will be configured to support
ATM networking solutions over SuperVision and 10BaseT DSL solutions over
Westell's FlexCap2 systems. SuperVision can reduce DSL installation costs by
consolidating the many DSL lines into a single network interface for
processing through the ATM network. FlexCap2 provides a low cost solution for
data access at speeds of 2.2 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream. This
automated rate adaptive DSL solution is designed to meet the needs of the data
user by providing integral bridging and a 10BaseT interface at the central
office and customer premises. Westell will be demonstrating this rate
adaptive DSL solution at Networld+Interop in the Westell booth.
Westell will demonstrate end-to-end DSL solutions available today using
Westell's SuperVision DSLAM and Nortel's Passport ATM switches. The
demonstration consists of streaming video and Internet access at speeds up to
7 Mbps using Nortel's Passport ATM switch with an OC-3c interface, Westell's
SuperVision Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM), and Westell's
high speed DSL systems.
AccessVision(TM) Element Manager, the standards compliant, scaleable,
distributed element management system built on Atlantech's Management
Application Framework, will be on display in the Westell booth and the
Atlantech booth (booth # 410). The element management system enables service
providers to manage Westell's DSL products from a single workstation,
providing a consolidated interface to the operator. Both FlexCap2 and
SuperVision offer a standard SNMP interface, enabling interoperability with
existing operational support systems for easy implementation in today's
networks.
"Westell is pleased to be joined by GTE, Lucent, Amati, Cisco, Precept,
Atlantech and Nortel at Networld+Interop to showcase to the world the
advantages of DSL as the solution for achieving true high-speed Internet and
remote LAN access and video applications," said Rob Faw, CEO, Westell, Inc.
"Collaborations such as these provide demonstrations of home or business
applications and allow end-users to experience the super fast modem speeds
that are actually available today."
