Sharon Reassures Likud Party
VOA News
24 Nov 2003, 16:56 UTC

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met with his Likud Party on Monday to address fears that he plans to move some Israeli settlements from Palestinian territory.
Israeli media said Sunday Mr. Sharon has a plan that includes moving some Israelis from settlements in Palestinian territory to an area of southern Israel. Mr. Sharon himself gave no details, but the possibility drew criticism from some Likud legislators.

Mr. Sharon has been under pressure to do something to revive the peace process. He conceded Monday that he was considering some unilateral steps - which he did not identify - but said they would not be taken as concessions but as in Israel's interest.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia said he would welcome removal of Jewish settlements, but only if it came as part of implementation of the U.S.-brokered "road map" to peace.

Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said Monday the two prime ministers could meet together next week - sometime after the Muslim holiday Eid-Al-Fitr.
