VDOnet Supplies Video Streaming Technology For Satellite Network

VDOnet Corp. said Monday that it was chosen to supply video streaming technologies for Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd.'s satellite-based private broadcast network. Called SkySurfer, Gilat's Internet Protocol-based broadcast network delivers video, audio and data to PC desktops outfitted with a satellite receiver.

"To us, the satellite network is just another network for delivering video," said Steve Chambers, vice president of marketing for Cambridge, Mass.-based VDOnet. "Our technology was chosen because of our ability to diagnose how much bandwidth is available and then scale the video up or down depending on that bandwidth."

Chambers said VDOnet and Gilat will begin testing the system within the next month. Gilat will market the service, which combines Very Small Aperture Terminal satellite earth stations that are used to amplify a signal to geographically dispersed sites. In addition to SkySurfer, Gilat offers a variety of other satellite-based telecommunications services, including telephone service.
