Kordia and RoamAD announce some more Wi-Fi action in New Zealand in the form of metropolitan networks: stuff.co.nz

<State-owned enterprise Kordia is set to announce its own network of WiFi hotspots, taking it further into competition with privately owned telcos that provide wireless Internet connections to customers such as Telecom, Citylink and Callplus.

Chief executive Geoff Hunt says Kordia will launch a number of "metro WiFi zones" in the next two weeks that will cover entire streets in Auckland and Taupo.

He says Kordia will team up with Auckland WiFi firm RoamAD to provide the service and that the companies will together pitch for a deal to provide a council-backed metro WiFi network in Auckland. The partnership brings together RoamAD's WiFi expertise with Kordia's extensive backhaul network.

Auckland City Council issued a request for information to suppliers in June, hoping to encourage a telco to build a WiFi network that residents and visitors could use to get wireless access to the Internet at speeds of two megabits per second from outdoor public spaces in the cbd and its fringes.

Economic development manager Karen Lyons said the council did not want to own or pay for the WiFi network, but would let the network operator install access equipment on the council's buildings and street lights and would help market and promote it. ... continued...

The main effort centres on Auckland City Council, but apparently Taupo will have main street coverage too.
