Basically it is his ambition to control the EIP space. He has made that very clear all along. The only question is whether or not he can succeed. He would be in a lot better position if he had done a secondary this spring and had $100 million in the bank. As it is he will have to continue to spend aggressively on R&D and marketing and hope that profitability comes before he runs out of cash. He is spending much more on Marketing and R&D than the competition:

Marketing Expenditures:
Jun-99 Sep-99 Dec-99 Mar-00 Jun-00
PLUM 1.152 1.639 1.984 2.26 4.266
VIAD 2.429 2.860 4.009 6.256 7.191
SQSW 1.238 2.052 2.619 3.74 5.218

R&D Expenditures:
Jun-99 Sep-99 Dec-99 Mar-00 Jun-00
PLUM .327 .503 .498 .775 1.117
VIAD 1.051 1.643 2.416 2.895 2.959
SQSW .546 .987 1.618 1.858 1.534

In fact, if you look at these numbers you will note that Stan is spending as much on R&D as SQSW and PLUM combined. It isn't possible to tell how much BRIO or HUMC are spending on R&D towards portals but considering that BRIO's total R&D budget is %5.5 million I doubt they are spending half on portals. HUMC is up around $10 million and I suppose they could be spending 1/4 of it on portals.

One thing is clear, and that is Stan's ambition to rule the space. In a year we should know if he will succeed.
