Could be. I know there has been some work recently to ensure companies properly report the value of acquisitions, since the recent merger madness has had lots of high priced buyouts. I recall reading recently that there was some concern that the books were being overvalued in attempts to justify the purchase costs.

This was same thinking that was driving the changing of the merger regulations, since often firms were merging simply to avoid having to take goodwill charges, when in fact they weren't really traditional merger candidates (ie, on firm much smaller, etc.)
