Handspring vs. Palm Battle Royale
Tom Taulli & Dave Mock
October 11, 2000

With the rest of the technology sector languishing at the close of the quarter, there's been lots of interest and "happy talk" surrounding PDA leaders Palm and Handspring. A recent flurry of product announcements from both companies and a well-received earnings announcement from Palm have fueled a nice boost in their shares. Both Palm and Handspring have shown 50%+ gains over the last quarter, with Handspring leading the charge with announcements of new springboard add-ons and increased market share.

The recent attention has renewed a lot of speculation about both companies and their prospects. Many investors have sided with the current "underdog" Handspring, hoping to invest early in the David that topples the giant Goliath. This has led to a surge in Handspring shares in the last month, showing signs that many investors think Handspring holds some advantages over Palm. But could the fight really be similar to the contest between Microsoft and Netscape?

Let’s take a look at some of the arguments that center on Handspring's advantages going up against Palm and sort through some of the actual data."
