Natural selection is more of a process than a who or what.

When the horse Barbaro broke it's leg at the Preakness it illustrated an aspect of the process. The lighter a horse's leg, the faster it can be lifted for the next step, and the faster the horse.... but if it becomes too light it may not be strong enough to stand up to the pressure of a race.

In days past that injury would have been a selection, the horse would have died. Now that horse may have the opportunity to be prolific. Luck, timing, and opportunity are all part of the process as well as the actual physical characteristics.
