Microsoft: 'Use our software or else' theinquirer.net

'The more things never change, the more they remain the same' seems to be the mantra in Redmond these days.

"Because MSN does not support third party e-mail software, if you are using an
application other than Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express, you will no longer be
able to send e-mail once we have rolled-out our new e-mail system."

While most folk will applaud MS' efforts to block junk mail involving debt
consolidation, once-in-a-lifetime business opportunities, cheap Viagra and spying on
your nearest and dearest, surely only the deeply-cynical would criticise the software
behemoth for forcing users to use its own email software rather than anyone else's?

And only the terminally-cynical would suspect that MS is rather hoping MSN
subscribers will take umbrage at the lack of email client choice and make alternative
arrangements because the company is really fed up with all this ISP nonsense and
would rather it all went away.

I confess to getting a rather continuous stream of the above mentioned spam, I am shocked to find out it wasn't the least bit personal. Anyway, it's good to see Bill & Co. maintaining their long standing devotion to "open standards". Embrace and Demolish, as Ballmer succinctly put it.
