I am now reading a most revealing book on World War 2 in the Pacific -- WAR WITHOUT MERCY by John Dower. I strongly recommend it. The atrocities committed by BOTH sides from the beginning of the conflict and the racist hate propaganda in America -- comparing the Japanese to apes and vermin -- was every bit as savage as Nazi propaganda against the Jews. The Germans were never demonized as a people like the Japanese were. When people are demonized as sub-human -- any atrocity is possible. Thus from the beginning of the war US and allied troops often summarily killed Japanese seeking to surrender. US subs often surfaced to kill the helpless survivors of Japanese ships they had sunk -- an atrocity the Germans were accused of falsely. The mass slaughter of civilian in Japanese cities was the logical result of an unremitting racist hate campaign, the smaller scale atrocities on both sides common from the beginning of the war, and heavy casualties inflicted by dug-in Japanese troops on American marines and soldiers. Flash forward to 2009. While the nation debates the morality of torture, the mass killing of Moslems year in and year out is accepted as if it were part of the natural order of things.
