When building or re-building anything certain facts of reality must be considered.

If you are building a new home, you can't design it so that your kitchen will extend over onto a neighbors property, you can't violate the neighborhood's home owner's association policies, you can't leave the foundation out of a three story house or forget to finish it with a roof, etc.

So, basic rules must be in place and enforced upon you a priori, if we expect the finished product to stand up and persist. Once you have a clear understanding of the design requirements, those who will inhabit the new home must have complete control and autonomy over the details. Anything else is an abuse of authority by those who would be guardians of the rules.
