In England they called that "The Dad's Army." Brit TV had a great comedy series by that name in the 1970s, about a bunch of old timers who were home guards. Their job was to protect England while the youngsters were off in foreign climes doing the same. Another one I liked was about The French Resistance and it was called "Allo, Allo." WWII was much more of a theme in England than in the US, though we've had our "Hogan's Heroes", "Combat", and, who can forget, "Blue Light" with Robert Goulet.
