Actually, rather than reinvent the wheel here I would strongly suggest that anyone interested start with a look at the SI Loral and Globalstar threads which are quite active and informative.

Also those of you who already are in the Q will notice that there are often references to G* and Loral on the SI Q thread since the core technology - the communication to the satellite in the G* system is CDMA (so called "satellite" CDMA) and the G* phones will use that technology for access to the satellites, and either GSM or CDMA for terrestrial links. And the Q owns a chunk of G* in partnership with Loral and others.
