NOK - Finesse? Largesse?
"Vanjoki said telecoms operators in Europe realized they did not yet need to build data services around new costly 3G or WCDMA radio spectrum networks but could use current ones."
Eric Finns are, I believe, known for their plainspeak, and Mr. Vanjoki should, I suppose, be commended for telling the Euro carriers that they really don't need 3G. It is hard to disagree with his conclusion that users don't care which G they are using . . . . But
Surely it lacks finesse for Nokia to pronounce these verities. Is this good customer relations? These same customers who having believed that 3G would be 3 Greatest and that the technology was ready for shrinkwrap, the standards would take a fortnight and IOT a weekend; nyet problyem with the '01 and '02 milestones in govt licenses; this new gen will be ready to rock and roll in late '01 so shoot the moon in the bidding. After the ~Euro115B party, it seems a lot of these customers have pretty heavy hangovers. And if NOK had any part in encouraging their excess of enthusiasm, wouldn't it show a little more finesse to NOT tell them they don't need 3G and their customers don't need and don't care???
Surely it affords a certain largesse to competitors and competitive technologies for NOK to badmouth 3G. Is it really good salesmanship towards, e.g. China Mobile, which just might have some capacity constraints in a dozen cities with pop >5M, to say that GPRS will fill the bill and wCDMA is not needed. Will the folks in Asia and latin American buy the new line that "MMS is 3G."???
This certainly surprises me.
