Todd, I see Zip as an "option" for sub-$1000 PCs for the home market, just as they are now. I don't see them as a "solution". (Depends on what you mean when you say "solution" - surely not a hard disk replacement?)

The problem with Zip in these machines is that they turn a $1000 PC into a $1150 PC. (Or, a $1100 PC shortly, I suppose.) The entry-level machines ain't gonna have them.

But in the home market there is not the imperative to not have expandability. Quite the opposite, but you have to do it without increasing the cost much.

IOM does not currenly have a product that attaches via a suitable interface. Parallel is slow, SCSI is not practical at the low end. I beleive that they must come out with an external Zip with a USB interface if they don't want to miss-out on this market. USB will be king for plugging-together home PC components.

This would not be difficult to do, but it would feel a lot more comfortable if IOM would make an announcement that they plan to support USB. It would reassure me that they are looking toward the future. (Or have they, and I missed it?)

By the way, the latest Computer Intelligence report puts PC penetration at 40% of househouse, and 50% of those with children.
