NAV 2001 was factory installed on my Dell Dimension 8100 running Windows ME and IE6. Now, when it boots-up, right after the Windows ME logo screen, I get a screen titled "NAV Auto-Protect" and saying, "Unable to initialize the virus scanning engine database files"

Then, once boot-up is completed, the small NAV icon in the bottom bar has a red "X" through it. I assume that means that NAV is not working.

I uninstalled NAV using the "Add/Remove" program, and reinstalled if from the Dell backup disk. I still get the message on boot-up, and NAV refuses to work.

My Symantec NAV subscription is up to date.

Any thoughts of why I cannot get NAV to work properly?

Much appreciated.
