AMD's Barcelona quad chips even in low-end 2GHz speeds remain in "very limited" supply, according to Lehman Brothers, even for the biggest OEMs.

The broker, which has been taking soundings, figures the 2.5+GHz Barcelona probably won't materialize in Q1 as expected and that only 2.3GHz-2.4GHz will be available.

Lehman remarks that "The delay in their ramp of Barcelona at higher frequencies may be a potential headwind for AMD and reduce the 'window of opportunity,' with Intel's Nehalem processor expected in 2H08."

As a matter of fact, it thinks that Intel could inch the entry of its next-generation microarchitecture, native quad-core 45nm part up towards mid-08.

It also thinks that AMD's transition to 45nm could slip to 4Q08 and points out that even when makes the jump it'll be lacking the Hafnium technology Intel is using. AMD and its foundry partner IBM are thought to be 18-24 months behind Intel on Hafnium, which could create leakage problems for AMD.
