I don't understand all of what I've read (yet!), but basically, hospitals - and doctors - are in a very competitive marketplace. Winning managed care contracts are vital and require measurement of information to develop cost management models. APACHE data can assist in identifying hospitals and doctors with good clinical (patient results) and financial outcomes. This would tell me why they have so many clients. Of note, APACHE introduced the use of predictive information for individual patients. This is important, as such outcomes (predictions) had usually been available for the trend analysis of groups.
