SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Transmeta Corp. (NasdaqNM:TMTA - News), a designer of microchips for electronic devices that need long battery life, on Wednesday posted a slightly wider quarterly net loss and revenue that fell sharply, saying demand from notebook manufacturers declined faster than expected.

Shares of Transmeta dropped about 20 percent in after-hours trade to $3.92 from a close of $4.96 on the Nasdaq.

The net loss was $23.7 million, or 17 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $22 million, or 16 cents, a year earlier.

Revenue was $2.7 million, compared with $6.4 million a year ago, the Santa Clara, California-based company said.
