SI says Obama's high school is No. 1

Punahou School in Honolulu is Sports Illustrated's choice this year as the high school with the best sports program in the nation.

And that's of note for readers of a political blog like this because Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama is a member of Punahou's class of 1979.

He tells the magazine that "I could've been a better ballplayer and a better student. ... But Punahou gave me a great foundation so that when I got older, and wiser, I knew what it was to work hard and strive for excellence. I think it instills that in a lot of kids."

Julia Morrill, an SI writer/reporter who edited the magazine's package (which is online here and will be in the edition that goes on sale tomorrow), tells us that SI used several criteria in ranking the schools. The number of championships won in the past year, naturally. Also: Fan support, facilities and "academic excellence," Morrill says.

As for whether the Obama connection influenced SI's thinking, Morrill says "we learned early on" that he was a Punahou graduate. But "it was much more about the program and this year's results" than any of the school's graduates.
