Trump is making an idiotic move imposing an up to 25% import tariff on Mexico "until they stop asylum seekers from showing up at the US border.

We may as well impose a 25% import tariff on Canada "until they halt all global terror attacks".

No one can seriously expect Mexico, Canada, airports or sea ports to prevent asylum seekers from showing up at US ports of entry.

If the US or Mexico could forcibly halt asylum seekers from seeking a hearing in the US, it would violate international treaties both nations have agreed to and signed. Even though it's under Republican control, the US Senate is not going to repeal these international treaties.

The primary victims of the import tariffs on imports from Mexico will be GM, Ford, and other major industrial firms, and industrial users of cable and wire. Consumers will notice a large price increase in fresh fruit and vegetables.

Trump's import tariffs on aluminum and steel from Canada and Mexico was stupid. The new 25% import tariff on Mexico is stupid on steroids.
.

We have some very specific problems with China in terms of trade, primarily problems with theft and hidden communist party subsidies to Chinese businesses. Solving this problem will impose costs on a lot of American businesses and consumers.

We cannot endanger this effort by becoming distracted with another barrage of tariffs on Mexico which is one of the primary locations businesses leaving China are moving their supply chain to.
