It's funny that you seem to imply some kind of funny business, when the mix of workloads was both diverse and realistic.

If you're referring to multi-tasking, yes there are dozens of small tasks being run under Windows, including virus checks, defrags, "performance optimizers" (this one is funny, since this tool only manages to destroy the performance of my Vista laptop). But most of these tasks aren't eating up the compute capabilities of a full core all the time. With regular software task management, even a dual core can handle dozens of threads that are running at once.

Rather than so many threads, perhaps your father would be happier with better single threaded performance to get his multiple tasks finished quicker, rather than having a bunch of slow threads that aren't well utilized when the background applications are idle most of the time.

Or perhaps you are your father are like the slowsky's, who like it slow.... ;-)
