"The legal battle between America Online Inc. and a direct-mail marketer over those ubiquitous AOL disks escalated a notch yesterday with the filing of another lawsuit. PTP Industries Inc., a Baltimore marketing concern that mailed out millions of disks for AOL, filed suit in federal district court in Maryland. In the suit, PTP alleges that AOL has failed to pay its bills, forcing PTP to shut down. The suit seeks up to $80 million in costs and damages. PTP's complaint comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed against AOL last week by Provident Bank of Maryland, a PTP creditor. AOL has said it was reluctant to pay PTP because of "falsified documents" about how many disks PTP mailed. In its filing yesterday, PTP alleged that AOL had defamed it by stating publicly that PTP "admitted to falsifying official U.S. Postal Service records."

I have been told AOL has a reputation for sharp practices but they really seem to have mismanaged this one.

One must wonder, are they that close to the edge financially?
