I think some of them are just plain dumb (as in a bag of hammers, as one SIer used to post here). Others just try to torture logic hoping that the other person lacks basic faculties. Remember, lots of folks hate math with a passion, and are much more adept at powers of persuasion. These people have difficulties with numbers and logical construction. Politicians especially fit this description. Others are just selfish beyond belief and want other countries to bear the burden of energy production, etc. They are the ones who yell NIMBY the loudest.
