The complex in Ningxia will include a polypropylene plant.

24 January 2006 Work starts next month on an innovative coal-to-chemicals plant at Ningxia, in China, which will have capacity to make 540,000tpa of polypropylene when it starts up in 2009.

The $1.5bn (E1.2bn) complex, including a coal gasifier plant, a methanol unit and a methanol-to-propylene plus the PP plant, is being project managed by the UK's Amec concern.

Neil Bruce, managing director of Amec's oil and gas business, said: "China is making major investments in plants to convert coal into oil, gas and chemicals to reduce its reliance on foreign imports and the Ningxia contract marks our entry into this new and fast growing sector."

According to Amec, the contract for engineering and procurement for the new plant will be announced in November. The Chinese company has not yet released details of the technology to be employed to turn coal into chemicals and polymers.
