Re. NEWP Aug 60 calls Been tempted to close this (big) position last week, but these winners usually run much further than anyone (especially the shorties) expects. Newport is in quite a unique position as an independent cap. equip. supplier to the fiber optics industry. GLW and JDSU have their own, internal cap. equip. departments, but hot new outfits like SCMR depend on Newport's facilities. At 2.3B NEWP isn't exactly cheap anymore and technically it looks overextended as well, but they just do not have a real competitor for some of their instruments. Imagine, they become the AMAT for the the fiber optics industry ! Unfortunately NEWP as a company is no match to the likes of SDL, Avanex & Bookham - and one should only stay with the very best.
