<<I think ShrubCo was simply amateurs who backed themselves up against the wall.<<

There are no men more dangerous on earth than "cornered" politicians. President Bush is in the unviable position where he cannot control the situation he faces on the ground in Iraq. He has insufficient military means. He cannot stand on the ground in Iraq because the US army is being ground to pieces there.

Now, his own nation is turning against his Middle Eastern enterprise. There are now TWO fronts, one military and the other political, where he is losing fast. President Bush cannot retreat from Iraq either. That would cause such a backwards political recoil inside the USA as to destroy his presidency and, likely, open the doors to a full-scale impeachment later in the days of his second presidency. Historically, President Bush is in Caesar's position. He is under siege, and surrounded by Antony's legions in the guise of the Iraqi revolt against the presence of infidel troops on the soil of Iraq. Back in his own Rome, in Washington, there are uneasy voices and a climbing chorus of public complaint from his hinterland.

The Rubicon is already behind him. He crossed that when he invaded Iraq. All the bridges are down and he cannot retreat. Now he has addressed his own nation, and he had NOTHING AT ALL to offer.
