Ken: Thanks for posting that article. What a puff piece. They sent Cindy Crawford up to somebody's room for a night to get that butt-smooch about their "nifty new" trailing-edge 32-bit operating system.

W2K is to NT 4 as Win98 was to Win95: a bug fix release (with 400,000 new bugs) that a monopoly can get away with charging for.

They'll sell a lot of it on the desktop because box builders will bundle it and it's the safe play for corporate IT, as one analyst mentions in the article. Once again, mostly a matter of lack-of-choice.

I predict there will be server horror stories within a month after they start shipping the Data Center version. 32 processors? Forget a synthetic benchmark and a BS press release about Tpmc's. Let's wait for the first PR release about a 32-way Pentium Xeon machine running somebody's high-volume transaction processor reliably. And I mean a real 32-way SMP, not one of those Unisys cluster-in-a-box global warming machines. We'll wait for a long, Long, LONG time.
