Strains on the transatlantic alliance. Sixty years after the end of the second world war -- that's two generations -- Germany's Schröder is finally saying NATO no longer "reflects Europe's growing weight".

These views do matter. The US is slowly running out of willing soldiers in Iraq, even with financial incentives so generous that the regular recruits are starting to look like mercenaries. Fighting on our own, the US isn't going to get a lot further, unless we institute a draft that is, or continue to turn more of the economy over to the military.

Just when the global economic dominance of the US is waning, we have a bunch of people in charge looking to create the New American Century.

Nato is outdated, says Schröder

Gerhard Schröder, the German Chancellor, has soured carefully choreographed efforts to heal transatlantic wounds by calling for a drastic overhaul of Nato and a bigger voice for Europe, just as George Bush prepares to visit Brussels.

Mr Schröder released a speech saying that Nato risked becoming outdated and was "no longer the primary venue where transatlantic partners discuss and co-ordinate strategies". The text proposed setting up a commission to propose improvements by the start of next year, and said "dialogue between the EU and the US neither reflects Europe's growing weight nor corresponds with new requirements of trans-atlantic co-operation".
