"ArcTel, a joint venture between Teligent and Mannesmann Arcor, today announced it was awarded eight major regional spectrum licenses to provide fixed wireless, broadband voice and data services to customers in major metropolitan markets in Germany.
The licenses, awarded to ArcTel by the German telecommunications regulatory authority, cover five of the largest metropolitan regions in Germany, including two of the largest cities in Europe -- Berlin and Hamburg.

Teligent, a global leader in broadband communications, and Mannesmann Arcor, the fixed-line telecommunications subsidiary of Vodafone Group Plc, formed the ArcTel joint venture in February of 2000 to build and operate fixed wireless networks in Germany. This recent award brings the total number of licenses held by ArcTel and its shareholders in Germany to more than 200.
"The German telecommunications regulatory authority's decision to award spectrum to ArcTel in the most significant business centers throughout Germany is evidence of the progress ArcTel is making in Germany," said Teligent Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alex J. Mandl. "This is a major victory for businesses in Europe's largest telecommunications market."
With today's license announcement, Teligent remains one of the largest holders of fixed wireless spectrum in Europe, with licenses that grant extensive access to businesses in three of the five largest European countries. Teligent is expanding its global presence through partnerships in Germany, France, Spain, Hong Kong and Argentina. The partnerships will deliver fixed wireless voice and/or data services using Teligent's SmartWave(TM) technology.

As the second largest telecommunications provider in Germany, Mannesmann Arcor has built a fiber optic backbone that stretches more than 11,000 miles throughout the country. The fiber backbone is supported by 23 broadband switching centers and 6,600 employees. In addition, Mannesmann Arcor has developed international transmission capabilities that extend its network reach into Italy, the United States, France and Austria.
ArcTel has broadband, fixed wireless links up and running in 50 locations throughout Germany. The full range of Mannesmann Arcor's advanced voice and data services featuring Teligent's digital SmartWave(TM) technology will be offered to businesses across Germany. |
