this probably isn't a very succinct answer, but an example of a "buy side" analyst would be one working for a mutual fund(who's doing research looking for candidates for the fund to buy), while an example of a "sell side" analyst is one working for a brokerage outfit like MER(the firm either sells the research as part of its services or uses it to give buy candidates to the firms customers)
