Obviously you have never worked with stainless steel.
Metalwork is not my line of business, so you're right about that.

However, Sandy Munro knows something about it. His overall synopsis is summaized:

"Sandy Munro, the renowned automotive teardown expert and founder of Munro & Associates, has been overwhelmingly positive about Elon Musk's decision to use ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless steel for the Cybertruck's exoskeleton. His commentary spans from the vehicle's 2019 unveiling through production discussions in 2023, emphasizing the material's durability, manufacturing advantages, and innovative structural benefits. Munro often frames it as a bold, functional engineering choice that aligns with Musk's visionary approach, reducing complexity and costs while enhancing toughness. "

"Munro highlights the stainless steel's resistance to dents, corrosion, and impacts—famously noting in a 2019 CleanTechnica interview that a heavy steel ball thrown at the armored glass demo would have "gone right through and into the passenger seat" on a standard vehicle, but the steel body provides superior protection."

"From the start, Munro's reaction was effusive—"love at first sight" after the 2019 reveal, per a CNET analysis where he called it an "engineering masterpiece" for off-roaders."

No, I've never worked in a body or paint shop.

I do know that stainless is a great material that holds up exceptionally well, but looks pretty bland over the years. So, if I were buying a CT, I would definitely get a professional wrap and expect to have to replace that every few years. But the body will last for a very long time.

I live in a town where unimaginable amounts are wasted on expensive cars. So, I don't find it usual, but it would never be right for a miser like me.

The biggest drawback is that if I wanted a diesel pickup truck, I would just need to buy one of those.
