I do know someone who runs a pay-for-porn web site who's rolling in
cash while my clean-as-a-whistle friend who runs an ISP is struggling because there is so much competition for basic services."

This is not a valid comparison. porn site is a Content Business
whereas ISP, mostly are Access Providers. This is not a
justification for your "Only Porn WebSite makes money" theory.
Reason why ISP are struglling is because of their business model,
which put them directly in competition with much bigger rival such
as phone companies.

The key to success in the commercial website that charges money is
whether a site could offer something other other can't offer for
free. Most site can't that's why they failed.

No I don't subscribe to Mutimedia Wire, but I do subscribe to Wall
Street Journal and willing to pay once free-trial period is over,
because I really think it worth it.

As far as porn stuff goes, I think it's silly for someone to pay for
those stuff, when one search to Altavista for Web or Newsgroup could turn up millions of free XXX gifs.
