I just hooked up an new box from gate a nubie..guess what..the
AOL program was sitting there..ready to eat his 32 bit winsock
if only he would click on it..I hid the winsock..and did a test
run..yes behold I was lead down the blissfull path to a 1-800 number,
---there was no upfront warning or even an indication..that the
user would be tapped for any sur charge.

Jim! That 800 number was to reach AOL in order to access the latest list of free local access numbers. It was not a surcharged national access line.

The situation you are referring to was caused by one PC vendor erroneously loading the surcharged 800 number onto the new systems that they shipped to unsuspecting purchasers. AOL had nothing to do with it, That vendor, through AOL, is making good on their error.

On Motley Fool and options: I wish you success with your investing, and your speculating in options. My point was that the Motley Fool have a long term investor bias (which is kind of like a predilection).

The situation you described, where AOL rejected your PC club's offer of a nearly free local hookup, is enlightening. Mad at them ever since?

My curiosity partially satisfied, I now await similar insight into the prior experiences and resulting motives of jack and Duncan.
