Earlier I posted this suggestion and although it would be an improvement, there are some flaws.

I have a plan. Let each party pick their moderators during the primary season. It could be done by the voters or delegates. The first place winner of each side would moderate a Presidential debate and the second place winner of each side would moderate a VP debate. So to recap, under this plan there would be 2 Presidential debates and 2 VP debates with both parties equally represented.

Flaw #1 - The party who would have control of the moderator in the debate closest to the election would have an advantage.

Flaw #2 - Partisans would refuse to watch the debates moderated by the opposing party's moderator selection.

Solution - The solution to both of these problems is to have dual moderators for each debate taking turns asking questions. This would also eliminate the necessity of an even number of debates that could be divided for each party.
