NTT President Outlines Shift To Multimedia Services
TOKYO (Nikkei)-Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. plans a thorough overhaul of its business practices, including capital investment and personnel and wages, President Junichiro Miyazu told The Nihon Keizai Shimbun. The telecom giant will shift away from a focus on infrastructure toward emphasis on providing multimedia services, Miyazu said, citing an industry-wide shift in that direction.
Basic telephone service no longer provides sustained profit, Miyazu explained, so NTT must generate demand for multimedia services. The world is already seeing a major shift away from ordinary phone service toward the Internet and similar activity, and NTT is behind the curve in these areas, its president stated. A historic makeover of NTT is to be completed by July 1999, when it will be split into two regional telecom providers and one long-distance carrier, all under a holding company.
"After the overhaul we will be offering new products, so the nature of the company must change," Miyazu said, calling the transformation into an information distributor a matter of corporate survival.
Miyazu expressed reservations about recent consolidations in the telecom industry. "We want to invest money and train our people first. I believe this will prove more favorable in the long run." |
