MANHASSET, N.Y. — Driven by soaring sales of 1.8in. and smaller devices for consumer electronics, the hard disk drive industry will see unit shipments rise 24 percent from 305 million in 2004 to 378 million in 2005, according to market research firm Trendfocus. "Consumer electronics devices are rapidly incorporating hard disk drives (HDDs), complementing core demand from PC and server markets," said John Donovan, vice president of Trendfocus. "It's not just digital video recorders (DVRs) and Xbox, it's the iPod and its legion of clones that are stimulating innovation and investment."
Donovan projects HDD sales to consumer electronics applications to account for 20 percent of unit production in 2005, surging to over 40 percent by 2008.
"Storage requirements for MP3 players, personal video players, and mobile phones, many of which will employ HDDs the size of postage stamps, are skyrocketing," Donovan added. The firm projects demand for miniature drives doubling in 2005 and growing more than 50 percent yearly through 2008.
According to the study, Seagate Technology continues to be the leading HDD supplier with a 26.9 percent market share. Western Digital, Maxtor, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, and Samsung round out the top five, said Trendfocus.
