If you are asking how do I maintain this longer term perspective, I do it because it works for me. I used to trade shorter term, but I just am not real comfortible with it. Also, when I review my trades, I have almost always found that I sold for a small gain when I should have held on for a huge gain. Dell, Vitesse, COMP USA, and Oracle I have held and sold off only to look back the next year and wish I had held them. I have found I am a pretty good stock picker, but a lousy timer. So I just accumulate and wait it out. It sure isn't as fun as trading though.
Also I am not married and have no children, so my needs are small.

If you are asking me why we have children and an entire society that demand instant gratification, I would probably have to say that they have never been hungry or really scared, like those from the great depression were. Probably catch up with us sooner or later.
