NYT: Faulty Encryption Blamed for MetroCard Problems
By Ray Rivera | July 31, 2008

Updated, 2:48 p.m. | New York City Transit officials say a faulty encryption device was to blame for the widespread breakdowns in MetroCard vending machines on Monday and Tuesday. The problems left thousands of subway and bus riders unable to use credit and debit cards to purchase MetroCards during peak hours of the morning and evening rush on Monday, and again during the Tuesday morning rush. Transit officials said on Thursday morning that an encryption device used to encode transmitted data for customer security was not working. The one functioning encryption device could not handle the load during peak hours, Paul J. Fleuranges, a spokesman for New York City Transit, the arm of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority that runs the subways and buses, said in an e-mail message.
