Hi twfowler; Re: "If we have 5 or 10% of the world's power what countries amounting to say 30% of the world's power could easily defeat us?"

Okay. We don't have enough military force to successfully occupy and subdue even the fairly poor continent of Africa. Sure, we could "defeat" every nation there, in combination, in the sense of destroying most of their expensive aircraft and ships, but there is no way in Hell that we could conquer and subject to our will the continent of Africa. This is despite the fact that our military expenditures are far greater than that of Africa's.

Re: "We have about 5% of the world population, in your opinion does our technology and wealth gain us nothing?" Yes, it gains us a lot. We can easily defend ourselves from, for instance, Africa. All we would have to do is sink their boats before they got to our shore. But that doesn't mean that we can conquer Africa. It's simply beyond our abilities. We could bomb the crap out of Africa if we wanted to, but they can't bomb the crap out of us. That's "something", but it's not enough to allow us to extend our will over that continent.
